Formative Pruning

Formative pruning is minor pruning during the early years of a tree’s growth to establish the desired form and to corrent weaknesses so they do not cause problems in later life.  By pruning out weaknesses while the tree is young you can encourage strong healthy growth.  The vast majourity of this work is done with sacateurs and hand pruning saws.  The prunning cuts you make are small and easily healed over by the vigourous growth in the early stages of a trees life.

Formative pruning:

  • Young trees

  • Gain desired form

  • Correct weaknesses

  • Encourage strong healthy growth

  • Prevent problems/potential failure in late life
